The Washington State Ferry
Getting to San Juan Island via Washington State Ferries
Overview
One of the most memorable ways to reach San Juan Island is by taking the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes. The ferry system connects the mainland to four main islands—Lopez, Orcas, Shaw, and San Juan—offering both scenic views and convenient travel options for walk-ons (foot passengers) and vehicles.
Walk-On Passengers (Foot Passengers) vs. Bringing a Car
Walk-On Passengers (Foot Passengers)
- Convenience & Affordability:
If you decide to leave your car on the mainland, you can park at the metered lot in Anacortes (rates are relatively reasonable).
- Round-Trip Ticket:
Round-trip tickets are the default for both walk-ons and vehicles, so you only pay once in Anacortes—there’s no additional fare for the return trip.
- Arrive Early:
Plan to get to the terminal at least 30 minutes before departure so you have enough time to find parking, pay, and buy your ticket.
- Getting Around the Island:
Once on San Juan Island, you can take taxis (like Eco Taxi Friday Harbor — reservations recommended), rent e-bikes, hop on the seasonal Jolly Trolley, or rent a car through M & W Auto.
Bringing Your Car
- Reservations Recommended:
Booking a ferry reservation for your vehicle is strongly advised, especially during peak seasons or weekends. You can reserve your spot on the Washington State Ferries Reservation Page
- Round-Trip Ticket:
Just like walk-ons, round-trip fares also apply to vehicles. Once you pay for the car and driver in Anacortes, you won’t pay again for the return trip. (Additional passengers need their own round-trip walk-on tickets.)
- Arrival Time:
If you have a vehicle reservation, plan to arrive at least 45 minutes before your sailing (though the ferry staff may occasionally show flexibility). If you don’t arrive in time, you risk losing your spot and incurring a $20 no-show fee.
- Drive-Up Spaces:
If you don’t manage to reserve, you can still arrive and purchase a “car and driver” ticket onsite. Some space is held for drive-ups, so there’s a chance you’ll get on the same ferry. If not, you’ll be in line for the next one.
- Cost Benefits:
Taxis on the island can be pricier if you’re traveling frequently, so bringing your car might be more economical for extensive exploration.
Ferry Schedules & Seasonal Changes
- Check Timetables:
Sailing times change seasonally. The Washington State Ferries website provides the most up-to-date schedules and service alerts.
- Peak vs. Off-Peak:
Expect more traffic and possible delays on summer weekends and holidays. Traveling midweek or during the shoulder season often comes with shorter lines and less congestion.
Things to Do at the Anacortes Ferry Terminal
- Grab a Bite:
You’ll find a coffee shop, snack bars, and sometimes other food vendors. If you have extra time, DoorDash can deliver directly to the terminal.
- Stretch Your Legs:
Stroll along the waterfront path, take in the views, or watch for seabirds and other wildlife.
Tips for a Smooth Trip
- Reservation Check-In:
If you’ve reserved a vehicle space, arrive at least 45 minutes before your scheduled sailing. Failing to do so could result in losing your reservation and a $20 no-show fee.
- Ticketing:
Round-trip fares are the default for both walk-ons and vehicles. You won’t pay an extra fare on the return trip. Additional passengers in your vehicle need their own round-trip walk-on tickets.
- Bring Essentials:
Snacks, water, and entertainment (especially for children) can help make waiting or sailing more enjoyable.
- Dress in Layers:
Ferry decks can be windy and cool, even on warmer days.
Alternate Transportation Options
- Private Boat Charters & Water Taxis:
Ideal for a direct but more expensive route to the island.
- Seaplanes & Small Aircraft:
Enjoy a scenic flight from Seattle-area airports or Lake Union for a unique journey.
- Shuttles & Local Transport:
If you need a ride on the island, Eco Taxi Friday Harbor is one of the local services available. Reserving ahead is recommended, especially during peak times.
Arriving at San Juan Island
After the ferry ride, you’ll arrive in Friday Harbor, just minutes from The Orca Inn. If you choose to walk, plan on about a 15-minute uphill trek. It can be a pleasant walk in good weather if you’re traveling light, but if you have heavy luggage or the weather is poor, a quick taxi ride with Eco Taxi Friday Harbor (reservations recommended) or driving (if you brought your car) is often the best option.
We look forward to welcoming you and helping make your stay at The Orca Inn a memorable one!
Thank you!
